Portmanteau

29 Nov 2025 | 15:30 - 29 Oct 2025 | 16:30

Portmanteau is a viola concert where everyday objects - like thimbles and clothespins - serve as playful sound enhancers. The rhythmic compositions are designed for intimate spaces and invite a wide audience to discover contemporary music in an accessible way.

Portmanteau

Portmanteau is a solo viola concert featuring original compositions for viola and everyday objects. A simple knitting needle, guitar cap, clothespin, and thimble transform the viola’s sound into a percussive, hybrid instrument. This leads to idiosyncratic virtuosity and emphasises rhythm as a primary expressive element.

The pieces are composed with intimate spaces in mind - for acoustic and dramaturgical reasons. They suit a wide audience, including young listeners and curious newcomers. Playful rhythms and the unexpected use of objects make Julie Michael’s work accessible, offering an inviting encounter with new music for those unfamiliar with it.
