Nella, a way of life An exhibition by Nella Bellinzoni and Ilke De Vries

20 Nov 2025 - 06 Dec 2025
OPEK (‘Meermuur’ room, 2nd floor)

“I moved from Italy to Paris in the 1970s, and to London in 1988. I made clothing and handmade jewellery to sell at Blackpool Punk Music Festival. I met friends and numerous bands there since 1996. The clothes went all around the world: to Europe, Japan and the States. Now I am living in Leuven, retired, and I make art from recycling my own stock.”

- Nella Bellinzoni

In the 1990s, from London, Nella Bellinzoni sold handmade punk clothing and jewellery worldwide. Now retired and living in Leuven, she works at de FactorY, a social-artistic studio in OPEK. There she creates freer art, reusing and reworking the themes and iconography from the clothing and jewellery she once designed.

Nella, a way of life

Collage books

For Fringe, de FactorY presents not only Nella’s work, but also her life process. In a series of collage books titled Nella, a way of life, Nella looks back through photos and memories at the creations she made and the countless encounters she had over the years. By its social-artistic nature, de FactorY is a place where the serendipity of both art and life constantly intersect.

Ilke De Vries

How can the story of Nella’s creative process be meaningfully told? Video artist Ilke De Vries creates a portrait, starting from the meanings and stories behind several of Nella’s tattoos - which also recur in her work. You’ll also see impressions of the music, parties, and encounters Nella documented. To ensure intergenerational reach, several secondary school classes are invited to visit the exhibition.
