Belief, Love & Failure Che Go Eun presents unexpected AI images sprung from traditional Korean Dancheong motifs.

20 Nov 2025 - 06 Dec 2025
BAC ART LAB KU Leuven (Hangar)

In Che Go Eun’s father’s eyes, she was a failure when she returned to South Korea. From that conflict came Belief, Love & Failure: an installation that translates his words and their impact into a visual language. Using her own watercolours and AI, she created new Dancheong motifs -traditional Korean patterns. She printed this contemporary interpretation on wallpaper, which dresses the imposing Hangar at BAC ART LAB.

Belief, Love & Failure

“Failure.” That’s what Che Go Eun’s father called her. To him, she was a lazy artist who didn’t fit his traditional image of a woman. From that conflict arose C., an installation in which Che Go visually translates her father’s words and their impact using AI. She fed conversations with her father and fragments from her journals into Stable Diffusion. Eun trained the AI herself to generate Dancheong motifs—traditional Korean patterns - because, like many AI tools, Stable Diffusion lacks information on non-Western art. Based on the generated AI images, Eun painted watercolours, which she then reintroduced into an ongoing dialogue between human and machine. The resulting patterns were printed on wallpaper and used to dress the BAC ART LAB Hangar.

About the artist

Che Go Eun lives and works between Brussels and Seoul and is fascinated by combining traditional painting techniques with digital technology. Tension between feminism and patriarchy, and between progress and tradition, is a key theme in her work.

Eun studied Korean Painting (Sejong University) and Fine Arts (MaHKU). In Belgium she studied Media & Information Design and Fine Arts at LUCA School of Arts. Her work has been shown at S.M.A.K. (Ghent), Art Sonje Center (Seoul), Kunsthal Aarhus (Aarhus), Kunsthal Extra City (Antwerp), and Bozar (Brussels).
